About the West Australian Rabbit Council

The West Australian Rabbit Council was established in 1986 and Incorporated in 1988. Up until then, the keeping of rabbits as pets was illegal as they were considered vermin. It was only in 2001 that the restriction on keeping more than two rabbits was officially lifted by the Agricultural Protection Board.

About Exhibiting Rabbits

Exhibiting Rabbits is great fun and you can learn a lot about your rabbits from your fellow exhibitors.

In Western Australia there are about 40 members of the West Australian Rabbit Council. About half of these members would be regular exhibitors.

The WARCI welcomes any exhibitors, whether you have a Breed Rabbit or a pet rabbit. To find out how easy it is to exhibit your rabbit, go to the Getting Organised page of our website. On this page there is information about Ringing your rabbits, transfer of rabbits, Stud Names, Pedigrees and how to enter your first show.

There is usually a rabbit show each month from March to December. Shows are not held over summer as it is too hot - for the rabbits as well as the exhibitors!! Shows are usually held on the third Sunday of each month with at least two separate shows happening on the one day at the same venue. Our Show Schedule and Show Dates and Judges are available online.

Rabbits are judged against a Breed Standard by qualified judges. Generally the Breed Standard that we use is the British Rabbit Council (BRC) Standard with a few modifications for colour. Each year we alter our Show Schedule according to the breeds that are being shown. Most breeds that are available have a separate class, and there are many different colour classes for more common breeds.
